Thousands throng Nairobi County street football, boxing extravaganza

Nairobi; 10th June, 2023: The Nairobi City County government sporting extravaganza held today at the heart of the city lived up to its billing as over 10,000 spectators thronged city hall was to witness the Nairobi Street Football tournament and the World Boxing Foundation super lightweight Women title.

The first ever street football tournament under the watch of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration was an astounding success that saw 18 teams drawn from all the constituencies in Nairobi county battle for glory, along City Hall Way where the county government offices of City Hall are domiciled.

Inside the county buildings at Charter hall, punches were flying in exciting boxing bouts organised by the county government and sanctioned by the Kenya Professional Boxing Commission.

Kenya’s Sarah Achieng went against Edith Solidad from Argentina in a World Boxing Foundation super lightweight title fight.

The City Street Football tournament kicked off along the road, which was closed to motorists at 8:00 am and teams squired it off until dusk.

The winners of the tournament pocket a Ksh. 50,000 cash prize with the runners up getting Ksh 30,000. Third place finisher was awarded Ksh 20,000 cash prize as well as trophies for all the podium finishers.

The Nairobi County Executive Committee member (CEC) for For Talent, Skills Development and Care Brian Mulama said that the County Government was more than impressed with the enthusiasm with which the event was greeted with by Nairobi residents noting that this was an eye opener and the county administration will do more of similar initiatives to develop sports across the county.

“I am very happy with the event today. We have had over ten thousand spectators turn up to witness this special day and cheer on the teams. We shall have more of this to ensure that our talented youth continue to develop their talents in sports as well as other areas in the creative sector,” Mulama said.

“As the Governor has told us all, Nairobi must work and such are the initiatives that help in identifying areas where we have potential so that we can develop it to bigger things. Sports is a multi billion industry that is employing a lot of people globally and we don’t want to be left behind,” Mulama added.
