National Super League (NSL) side Nairobi United has today entered into a new lease of life following the club’s new found substantially improved prospect of existence with the entry of new club ownership.
The Johnson Sakaja Foundation, under the leadership of Nairobi City County Governor Johnson Sakaja, has officially taken over Nairobi United Football Club in a move that marks a significant step in supporting sports through the Sakaja foundation.
Nairobi United, which plays in the second division NSL, and currently in fourth position in league standings after match-day one, will henceforth be ran and fully supported by the Sakaja Foundation. There is also talk of ongoing negotiations to have the Nairobi County Government adopt the team in the future.
The Sakaja Foundation chairman Osman Khalif believes that with the resources that the foundation is going to pump into the team, Nairobi United will rise to become the biggest side in the National Super League as they seek to gain promotion to the top tier Football Kenya Federation Premier League in the next season.
The official take-over will be done at City Hall, Today Friday 27, September, 2024 and will be graced by the Governor of Nairobi Johnson Sakaja as well as the Nairobi United FC team members and the leadership of the Sakaja foundation.
During the event, Governor Sakaja is expected to announce the start of the 2024 edition of the Annual Sakaja Super Cup which is set to start across different sub counties in Nairobi.
The Sakaja super cup which was started in 2023 with the inaugural competition being won by Githurai All Stars will see some the most outstanding talented players get scouted and signed to play in the NSL for Nairobi United in a move that is aimed at recognizing talent and offering them opportunities to advance their football careers.
Governor Sakaja is said to be keen to support the team into promotion in the next season as a team fully owned and supported by the Sakaja Foundation.
The team has been among the top teams in the NSL and with the latest windfall from the Sakaja foundation, analysts opine that Nairobi United will be the team to beat in the new season. Currently the team in in fourth position with three points after their opening day 2-0victory over Coast Stima. Nairobi United play Nzoia Sugar in their second league match on Sunday, 29 September.
The Nairobi based team was formed in 2018 and earned promotion to the NSL on their first attempt.In less than eight years, the Nairobi-based club seems to have established themselves as a force to reckon with if their performance is anything to go by and are determined to complete their fairytale journey by securing a slot in the FKF Premier League next season.
