The Nairobi County Assembly has endorsed a bill aimed at bolstering food safety measures within the county.

Sponsored by Stazo Omung’ala, the Deputy Majority Whip and Upper Savannah Ward Representative, the bill titled ‘Food Safety and Fortification’ addresses key facets of food production, storage, distribution, and consumption to ensure a secure environment for residents’ foods.

During a media briefing at City Hall, Stazo underscored the rising cases of foodborne illnesses linked to various food handlers across the county. He emphasized that the bill’s implementation would serve to regulate the industry and curb such risks effectively.

“The primary objective of this Act is to reinforce regulatory oversight to ensure compliance with food safety and fortification standards, thereby fostering increased demand and consumption of safe and adequately fortified foods,” elucidated Hon. Omung’ala.

He further emphasized that the bill aims to monitor and assess the performance of food safety and fortification measures across different levels, including industry, market, and household levels.

“I extend my gratitude to my colleagues for their unanimous support in passing this motion. Our goal is to establish a comprehensive framework for resource mobilization, financing, and performance management to promote food safety and fortification within the county,” Stazo concluded.
