Kenyan Student Leaders Champion Pan-Africanism, Seek AU Involvement

By Dennis Muritu

The Lake Side Caucus of student leaders from universities across Kenya issued a joint press statement today, congratulating the winning candidate of the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship election and reaffirming their commitment to the AU’s mission. The Caucus also expressed gratitude to President William Ruto for his support of Raila Odinga’s candidacy, acknowledging the complex factors influencing the election’s outcome.

Beyond the election, the student leaders focused on the future of Pan-Africanism, urging the AU to actively involve university students in its work. They proposed several initiatives, including student shadowing programs at the AU, allowing students firsthand experience in continental governance.

The Caucus also called for the creation of Pan-African University Forums and digital repositories documenting the contributions of African leaders, from the founders of the OAU to contemporary figures like Raila Odinga. These platforms, they suggested, would foster intellectual exchange and preserve African history. They envisioned virtual lectures by prominent leaders and scholars, including Odinga, on topics such as democratic change and Pan-Africanism.

Further, the students proposed the establishment of AU Centers for Democracy and Governance within universities. These centers would honor the sacrifices of those who fought for Africa’s liberation and promote research and dialogue on democratic governance, recognizing the historical role of student movements in advocating for democratic reforms.

The Lake Side Caucus announced their intention to seek audiences with President Ruto, Raila Odinga, and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi to discuss these proposals and explore how they can be implemented and escalated to the AU. They expressed confidence that with national leadership support, these initiatives can empower young Africans and shape the continent’s future.

“As student leaders, we are committed to advancing the ideals of Pan-Africanism and ensuring that the voices of young people are heard,” stated Zadock Nyakwaka, Chairman of the Lake Side Student Leadership Caucus. The Caucus called on the AU to embrace these proposals and work collaboratively to build a brighter future for Africa.
