Mbatia, in line with Governor Sakaja’s promise to improve and develop new sports facilities which will see the talented youth in Nairobi leverage on their sports abilities to advance their talent.

The Uhuru Complex Sports Facility to be run by the County Government of Nairobi boasts of among others, a football pitch which can host 8×8 football matches, basketball court a convertible court that can be used for volleyball, handball, basketball and a multi purpose hall that can accommodate indoor games like chess, boxing among other sports. It also has a gym and aerobics facility and is complete with a police post for the purpose of security.

According to Mbatia, the facility will benefit academies in Nairobi who lack sports facilities as the learners will have a facility where they can hone their talent and create possible future careers in the multi billion sports industry.

The Uhuru complex will be run as an academy which will employ the expertise of former professionals in the various sports disciplines to coach the players.

“I am very excited that the idea I came up with to establish a sports facility is finally a reality. This complex will help in nurturing the talents of people, not only in my ward but the larger Eastlands region and I thank Governor Sakaja for accepting to join us in making this dream a reality,” Hon. Mbatia said.

“As the area MCA, I am happy that this is happening here and I know that many people in Eastlands are employed in the area of sports and this facility will employ many of our youths and help to hone the talents of many youths especially in Kariobangi South and the adjacent areas,” Hon. Mbatia added.

Governor Sakaja has been on a mission to honour his pledge of developing sports and nurturing talent and has since taking charge as the city boss seen the development of various sports facilities. Uhuru Complex joins in the various sports projects by the Sakaja administration among them the construction of Joe Kadenge stadium (formerly City Stadium) and Woodley stadium which are currently under construction, the completion of Dandora Stadium, construction of a basketball court at Camp Toyoyo among others.

“Governor Sakaja as a nominated M.P in 2013 toured the area and pledged to support the Uhuru Sports Complex.  10 years later,  the dream promise is now a reality with Sakaja having taken over as Nairobi Governor”

Sakaja said that his commitment to develop sports facilities was a pledge he gave to the people of Nairobi and that his administration will continue to support sports projects to ensure that talent is developed and the youth of Nairobi can earn from their talent due to the availability of such facilities like the Uhuru complex.

“When I was elected, I said to the great people of Nairobi that we will ensure we have good sports facilities. I made a commitment that any sports facility under the county government that had stalled is revived and is completed as well as coming up with new facilities like this one here” Governor Sakaja said.

“Other Governors before me had left some projects unfinished meaning that the people of Nairobi would have lost public funds to unfinished projects and still remain without the amenities but not in this administration. We shall make sure that we complete all projects and do new ones to give our people the services they deserve,” Sakaja noted.

Sakaja has made a commitment that other sports facilities in Nairobi will be upgraded including Riruta grounds, Mwiki grounds and more sports facilities that are managed by the county government.
