Waithera Chege Call on Empowerment during the International Women’s Day

Waithera Chege, Member of the County Assembly for Nairobi South has called on women empowerment during the Pre-international Women’s Day event sponsored by Echo Network Africa and Diamond Trust Fund whose theme for 2024 is “Economic empowerment, Inspire Inclusion”.

She called on women political leaders across the country to prioritize the articulation of women’s issues in their respective areas of jurisdiction .

Honorable Chege emphasized the importance of women governors leading by example in implementing the women’s agenda before urging male governors to do the same in their counties.

“Women are still disadvantaged in some careers and much has not been achieved in gender balance and inclusion. The society need to invest in women, empower them, eliminate all GBV issues to create a friendly environment for all,” Waithera said.

Highlighting the performance of County Assemblies, Honorable Chege challenged women governors to focus on their counties’ needs first before advocating for similar action from male county governors.

She emphasized the necessity for women governors to ensure that a significant portion of their county budgets is allocated to women’s issues, citing the example of Nairobi County’s budget where she noted a lack of adequate allocation for women’s issues.

Additionally, as the Chair of UDA Women MCAs in the county, Honorable Chege emphasized the importance of including women MCAs in critical committees, particularly the Budget Committees, to ensure that women’s issues receive the necessary attention.

She also encouraged women to participate more actively in public forums to ensure their voices are heard in decision-making processes.
