PS Kenya CEO, Dr. Margaret Njenga, Advocates for Universal Access to Family Planning at DESIP Conference

Nairobi, November 30, 2023 -The National DESIP family planning conference kicked off in Nairobi Kenya with key speakers asking for collaboration to attain best practices and shape the future of family planning in Kenya.

On her keynote address, Dr. Margaret Njenga, the Chief Executive Officer of Population Services Kenya (PS Kenya), expressed gratitude to the partners who made the event possible, emphasizing the crucial role they play in driving positive change. Notable contributors acknowledged included the Development Partner represented by FCDO, the Ministry of Health, the Council of Governors, among other consortium partners.

Under the theme “Succeeding together in creating impact through localizing global solutions,” Dr. Njenga stressed the importance of collective efforts in ensuring every woman and girl has the power to access family planning when needed. She highlighted the harsh economic conditions in Kenya, emphasizing the risk of thousands of girls losing access to contraception due to prohibitive costs.

Drawing attention to the global surge in the need for family planning, Dr. Njenga referenced WHO estimates, urging the participants to address barriers in access and quality of family planning services. She called for a functional health system that prioritizes women and protects them from financial hardships, emphasizing the role of the DESIP Project in achieving transformative changes.

The two days conference showcased achievements and lessons from the DESIP Project, demonstrating its impact on communities reinforcing the commitment to leaving no one behind. Dr. Njenga, who has over 30 years of experience at Population Services Kenya, highlighted the organization’s role in improving the health of Kenyans and contribution to the national agenda on family planning.

She outlined ambitious objectives for the next five years, stressing the need for increased funding to bridge the gaps in women and girls’ healthcare. She urged partners to translate commitments into action, ensuring sustainable investments for the universal availability of quality, accessible, and affordable safe modern contraceptives.
