Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has unveiled central kitchens for Nairobi school feeding program for 250,000 children in a Ksh 1.2 billion schools food subsidy program.
Governor unveiled the program as part of his promise to the city schools launching various kitchens in Nairobi. The kitchens will serve free lunch to all public primary schools in Nairobi. “Nairobi inawork. Today, we are launching these kitchens to ensure that our children have meals while at school so that they are able to concentrate in their studies,” Sakaja said.
The Dishi Na County School Feeding Program will be spread across all schools in the county as the county government moves to implement promises given during the elections period.
“Today is a beautiful day for Nairobi. In Nairobi County, one out of four children is missing school because they lack food. From today, every child in public schools in Nairobi will have a hot meal at lunch time,” Sakaja said.
“Times are hard and parents are stressed. My administration has removed the lunch burden from the shoulders of parents and now our children will study without the worry of spending the day in school on empty stomachs,” the governor added.
Sakaja thanked the county assembly for approving the Ksh 1.2 billion for the school feeding program noting that from 28th August, the program will be unrolled and will last forever. Sakaja said that he will ensure that during his term in office, he will ensure that the program is done and asked his successors to continue with the program even after he exits City Hall after his two terms in office.
