Nairobi County to host street football, boxing extravaganza

Nairobi; 9th June, 2023: The World Boxing Foundation super lightweight Women title will be in contention tomorrow, Saturday 10th June in Nairobi as the Nairobi City County government organises a sporting extravaganza that will see Nairobi residents treated to three sports events along City Hall way road in the Nairobi Business District.

The sports extravaganza will begin with a Nairobi City Street Football tournament which kicks off at 8:00 Am in the morning and goes all the way to dusk.

The street football tournament will include competition between 18 teams drawn from all the constituencies in the County.

The tournament, organised by the county government under the guidance of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, will see the winners pocket a Ksh. 50,000 cash prize with the runners up getting Ksh 30,000. Third place finisher will be awarded Ksh 20,000 cash prize as well as trophies for all the podium finishers.

In the second part of the extravaganza, lovers of boxing will witness boxing bouts to be staged from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM.  A high voltage bout between Kenya’s Sarah Achieng against Edith Solidad from Argentina will be the main bout on the cards in a World Boxing Foundation super lightweight title fight.

The attendants will later get a chance to watch the live UEFA Champions League match between England’s Manchester City against Italian giants Inter Milan which kicks off at 10:00 PM.

The Nairobi County Executive Committee member (CEC) for For Talent, Skills Development and Care Brian Mulama has called on Nairobi residents to turn up and grab the opportunity as the Nairobi government seeks to develop the sports sector through capacity building and offering opportunity to the youth to explore their talents in sports.

Mulama said that the county government has all eyes trained at developing sports and it is for that reason that the county has partnersd with theKenya Professional Boxing Commission in staging the professional bout.

“Lazima IWork Nairobi na Governor Johnson Sakaja. Let us meet at Charter Hall on Saturday, 10Th June for World Boxing, Street football and Champions League Final watching,” Mulama said.

“All the best to Kenya’s Sarah Achieng in tomorrow’s Battle with Edith Solidad from Argentina. Am optimistic the World Boxing Foundation super lightweight title to be held at Charter Hall will remain with our girl Sarah,” Mulama added.

Nairobi County has a history of supporting football and boxing events over the years.
