Leading Kenyan dairy processing firm Brookside has entered into the plant-based milk business after unveiling two brands of the product produced from soy and almond.

The products which were launched on Wednesday at the company’s Ruiru plant will be sold under the flagship Brookside brand in one-litre packets.

“Venturing into a new category has never been this exciting. Our new 100% plant-based milk is a unique product” said Benjamin Nzile, Manager Innovations and New Product Development at Brookside Dairy.

A packet of Unsweetened Almond Brookside milk will retail at ksh 420 while unsweetened Soy Brookside milk will go for ksh. 310.

Plant-based alternatives to milk are becoming popular for health, ethical, and environmental reasons. The product is suitable to people who may prefer the taste of plant-based milk alternatives over regular cow’s milk.

The product is appropriate for people with allergies and intolerances or for those who prefer a dairy-free diet.

Comparing to the diary business, plant based milk product market is considerably small and Brookside’s launch will undoubtedly unsettle the market.

Brookside Dairies is the largest milk processing company in Kenya, where it controls over 50 percent of the dairy market.  The company’s products include fresh and powdered milk, yogurt and butter which are distributed in the East African countries of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
