Nairobi- 23rd April,2023: The Nairobi City County has laid down plans to hire 3,500 youths to be engaged in clean up exercises around the city as plans to transform the expansive Dandora dump site into an energy power plant.

The City CountyGovernment is in the process of hiring youths across the 85 wards for clean-up of Nairobi as the long term dream to turn Dandora waste to energy is notched up.

Nairobi city county governor Johnson Sakaja said the new recruits would assist with the routine sweeping, garbage collection and cleaning of the city.

Speaking when he attended a Church service, Sunday, 23 April at the new Sanctuary at Friends Church (Quakers) in Donholm, Sakaja said that the procurement processes to acquire garbage tractors, lorries and compactors for the kick-off of clean-up exercise was already in place as the county government is rallying to establish an energy processing plant at Dandora dump-site, opening a new income stream for City Hall and create opportunity for the capital to diversify its power sources.

“The city of Nairobi has become dirty and the menace has been for a long time. You can imagine people who were cleaning the streets ages ago are the one still doing it today,” Sakaja quipped.

“The Dandora energy processing plant will be commissioned within 30 days. The plant is assessed to produce 45MW of electricity,” Sakaja noted.

The electricity generating plant will not only sustainably solve the garbage menace but also add to the country’s renewable energy.

This move is one among many which have been initiated by the Sakaja administration in his clarion call of making Nairobi work “Lazima Ita Work” that has been the Governor’s motto.
